Artist Statement

From the moment I learned to walk until the day I left for college, my parents have encouraged me to be independent. Strong and stoic all my life, I never fully understood why I felt so alone. However, physical isolation as a result of the state of the world as well as emotional isolation as a result of the death of friendships during a transitional period of my life has forced me to finally encounter and understand my own self-enforced separation.

Feeling that the end of his life is imminent, a young adult who struggles to find joy in his life is visited by the God of Death, a tiny black cat, who steals his food and plans to hoard his soul. The domineering presence of the cat's demands and the actions of the protagonist are reminiscent of the emotional distance I put between myself and others. My work acts as a conduit for dialog within myself. The protagonist is never given an identity, but they are born of personal frustration and are thus intimately connected to me. I seek to understand what isolation can do to someone's mind, and how disconnected people build relationships and care for others.
